African Creativity: Musa Motha, the Impossible Breaker
Musa Motha, a 27-year-old dancer from South Africa, is a remarkable talent who has achieved numerous international accolades despite being an amputee. Born and raised in Johannesburg, Motha’s journey began when he was diagnosed with bone cancer at age 11. Despite having his left leg amputated, Motha’s love for football led him to discover his passion for dance.
In 2023, Musa made history on Britain’s Got Talent by receiving the first-ever Golden Buzzer for a group performance. All the judges pressed the buzzer, agreeing that the act deserved to advance directly to the live shows. Watch the incredible performance by Musa here:
Motha began dancing on the streets in 2010, immediately became well-known, and appeared in music videos, including Drake’s “One Dance.” He joined Vuyani Dance Theatre in 2018 and improved his contemporary, afro-fusion, tap, and ballet dance techniques there. Due to Motha’s talent, he has been featured in worldwide publications, fashion and art magazines, TV interviews, and tours.
Motha is a multi-talented performer fluent in several languages, including Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, and English. He wants to inspire others with disabilities and break social stereotypes. He adapts his choreography to fit his condition and believes variety is key. Motha’s positive outlook has led to opportunities worldwide.
